Dean's Home

Dean's Home

Dean Brady grew up with music all around him: His parents played in Meanjin/Brisbane soul ensemble Banawurun, and Brady would proudly sing for family and friends as a child. While the classic Motown artists have stayed with him as touchstones, the First Nations singer-songwriter—descended from the Gugu Yalanji and Birrigubba people as well as the Matabele of Zimbabwe—has updated his influences to include ’90s R&B and modern beatmakers. His debut mixtape reflects that spectrum, emphasising vibes and grooves while showcasing the understated finesse of Brady’s singing. “Meant to Be” hinges on a hypnotic, swaying vocal refrain, while “Phases” sees him mix up the pace of his delivery and “Sneakers” steps back from heavier themes to pay snappy tribute to the grounding power of his shoes. Sydney’s Ruby Jackson sings with Brady on “21 Questions”—an unflinching invitation for honesty—and also co-writes “Brand New Smile”, a song about wanting a new partner to see you for who you really are. Tracing a coming-of-age arc from first love to more complex feelings, Dean’s Home is a strong introduction to Brady’s chill, introspective triangulation of soul, pop and R&B.
